Kearney right pick for Warriors
Getting the culture right could give the Warriors a serious shot at the top.
That’s the response of Manurewa MP and former rugby and netball international Louisa Wall to Steve Kearney’s appointment as coach of the Auckland-based National Rugby League franchise.
It follows a board decision to sack Andrew McFadden after a heartbreaking season where the team failed to fire consistently on the field and had discipline problems off-field.
Kearney is currently assistant coach at the Brisbane Bronco’s and coach of the Kiwis.
Ms Wall says having a Maori on the job should count for something,
"There were some cultural issues in terms of how the Warriors players may have received some of messages from the coach. I think being yelled at in a public place or at half time so people saw that you were being publicly put down. That's not how we as Maori and Pacific like to receive information. Maybe that type of interaction Stephen will address and bring to the club," she says.
Louisa Wall says the Warriors have it in them to win the NRL.
