Auckland Unitary Plan unveiled

Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says the tests for Auckland’s Unitary Plan will be whether it makes a dent in the city’s housing supply and affordability problems, and whether Maori interests are protected.
An independent panel today released its recommended rules for development in the super city, which is the product of five years of deliberation.
The council now has until just August 19 to consider it.
Ms Turei says while Aucklanders struggle with increasing rents and house prices, Maori interests shouldn’t be sacrificed in response.
"We have sacred sites in Auckland that are being effectively bulldozed for housing developments when it is not necessary to do that so we will see if there is any protection in there for our insights and for Maori design as well around housing." she says.
The Unitary Plan is available on the council website, so Aucklanders can find out what development is permitted in their neighbourhoods.
