Kaumatua show how it’s done at sprints

Aotearoa has continued its golden run in the World Va’a Sprint Championships in Queensland.
Yesterday was mainly the double-hulled waka out on Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast, with a 12-man team from Akarana Waka Ama’s Team Pineula taking masters’ 40 gold, and Ruamata taking the masters 40 women’s title.
Kaihoe o Ngati Rehi from Te Tii in Northland won the junior 16 men’s final by two seconds, and crews from Otaki, Horouta and Cook Islands OCC made it an Aoteraroa trifecta in the junior 16 women’s final.
James Papali’i from the Manukau club says one of the day’s highlights was the performance of the Hawaiians who took out the masters 70 titles for crews aged over 70.
"These guys and women are incredible. They're still fit and they're into waka ama, some of them since they were kids," he says.
