Urban Ngapuhi need to have their say

Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare is encouraging Ngapuhi people to make submissions on a new structure of conduct treaty claim negotiations.
The proposal, developed in response to Waitangi Tribunal criticism of the government’s mandating process, has beed developed by a joint engagement group drawn from both Tuhoronuku, which was given the mandate, and Te Kotahitanga, which has been pushing for individual hapu to have a greater say.
The most contentious part of its draft report seems to be a proposal to get rid of urban Maori representatives on the new body that will oversee the negotiations.
Mr Henare says people need to speak now.
"The cool thing is they are in the room talking to each other which is a far cry from where they were a year ago. It's not perfect. I do appreciate the consultation round the engagement group did was a bit rushed, Many felt they did not get the opportunity to say things or come along to hear, so I will be encouraging as many Ngapuhi as possible to make a submission," he says.
Feedback on the Ngapuhi engagement group report closes on May 23.
