Former Labour Party Minister Dover Samuels on Paakiwaha

Last year former Labour Party MP, Dover Samuels gave evidence to the Waitangi Tribunal calling for a public apology for Maori children who were beaten during the 1940s for speaking their own language at school – including himself
Te Pire Mo Te Reo Maori – The Maori Language Bill was passed in Parliament last week but with an amendment of acknowledgement from the crown for the decline in Maori language.
Mr Samuels says he was pleased when contacted by the Minister for Maori Development, Te Ururoa Flavell who asked if he would tautoko this, which he did but, Mr Samuels says this is only the first step and there is still a long way to go.
