Court orders Wairoa freezing workers back on normal shifts
Labour’s Ikaroa Rawhiti MP Meka Whaitiri says Talley’s should respect a judgment from the Employment Court judgement requiring staff at its Wairoa freezing works to be put back on their normal shifts.
In November the court ruled illegal the company’s lock-out of workers who would not sign individual contracts, and last week it struck down its practice of rostering all union members onto a new night shift.
It also ruled that the company is breaching section 97 of the Employment Relations Act by employing replacement workers during a lockout.
Ms Whaitiri says the five month standoff has come at a huge cost to Wairoa.
Apart from the social and economic impact on the community of having 170 people out of work, there has been a huge emotional and physical toll on the workers and their whanau.
