Maori groups offered fundraising tips

Look to your whanau first is the advice veteran fundraiser Tony Lindsay is offering cash-strapped Maori groups.
Mr Lindsay, who has raised millions of dollars from groups like Greenpeace and Amnesty International, is sharing his secrets at a free public seminar in Hamilton on Monday.
He’s also developed the Vega cloud-based engagement platform to give small conservation and community groups the same fundraising and publicity tools as the big groups.
Mr Lindsay says Maori in particular have networks they need to foster, such as marae with descendants scattered around the world who can be tapped for cash for the right kaupapa.
"So you reach out to people, you engage with them, you tell tem what you're doing. You could be a sports club, you could be providing social services into the community, if you reach out into that community and say to people 'this is what we're doing, we need your help,' if you do it right, you will actually get a wonderful warm response," he says.
Tony’s Lindsay’s Vega seminar, which is backed by cloud accounting software provider Xero and accountants BDO, is at 5.30pm Monday in the Hamilton Gardens.
