Lisa Reihana wins Venice Biennale spot
Multimedia artist Lisa Reihana from Ngapuhi has been chosen to fly the flag for Aotearoa at the art world’s biggest showcase.
She will show her panoramic video in Pursuit of Venus [infected] at the 2017 Venice Biennale rendered to its full resolution, with additional scenes added.
She will also create a new photographic series.
The video, which is a filmic re-imagining of a 19th century French scenic wallpaper depicting an idealized Pacific paradise, has just finished a successful run at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki.
The gallery’s director Rhana Devenport is the curator for the project.
Biennale commissioner Alastair Carruthers says the work has already captured a huge New Zealand audience and international attention with its sensuous re-imaging of people, place and time.
