Funds boost for Mahia stream restoration
The Whangawehi Catchment Management Group has picked up almost $90,000 from the Community Environment Fund to restore the Whangawehi stream on the Mahia Peninsula.
Environment Minister Nick Smith says his ministry supports the project because of the way it gets landowners, iwi and hapu, district and regional councils as well as government agencies to work together.
Led by Mahia environmentalist Kathleen Mato, the group is planting more than 200,000 trees and fencing the stream off from livestock and goats.
It also monitors the water quality of the stream and some key tributaries to gauge the impact of the restoration project over time.
Dr Smith says children from Te Mahia School will also be involved in the restoration project and will act as kaitiaki of the local environment for future generations.
