Henare leaves choice to north

Labour MP Peeni Henare says it’s up to the people of Te Taitokerau to say if they want him to fill his late father’s spot on Tekaumarua, the council of advisors for King Tuheitia.
The issue was raised yesterday when Ngati Hine brought the kawe mate or remembrance of Erima Henare to the annual Koroneihana hui at Turangawaewae Marae.
Mr Henare told Radio Waatea host Dale Husband his father had planned for the future.
" For every hui and every responsibility that he had across the country he would take me along to every meeting and he'd been doing that for a dozen years now at least. So I am very familiar with the environment. I understand the roles and the responsibilities. Any opportunity to continue his legacy while carrying my own views, being a little bit younger and what have you, if those kind of opportunities do come up, by all means I'd consider them," he says.
Peeni Henare says for now the Kingitanga is happy to let the family mourn for the loss of their father.
