Aotearoa invests in Chathams fish plant
Aotearoa Fisheries says it is on track to complete a new $3 million Chatham Islands fish processing factory by November.
The existing facility is being demolished and staff have been redeployed to other plants during the build.
Manager George Day says the plant will be a a more efficient and safer place to work, and it can process more fish in a smaller space.
He says it will allow the company to promote the abundance of Chatham Island seafood like blue cod, lobster, paua and other wetfish to high-end global markets.
Aotearoa Fisheries chief executive Carl Carrington says the plant will strengthen the companies ties with its iwi shareholders on the islands, Hokotehi Moriori Trust and Ngati Mutunga.
The rebuild of the plant follows a pledge from the Government to invest $52m upgrading the Waitangi Wharf.
