Maori negotiators not properly paid
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says treaty negotiations are not a level playing field.
She says the problem is not former Cabinet Ministers being paid large sums to negotiate treaty settlements for the crown as asserted by New Zealand First leader Winston Peters but Maori negotiators not being paid.
"It makes it extremely difficult for negotiations to be fair and equitable when you have got people who are doing it as volunteers and having to find all this other time to do the negotiations compared to crown negotiators who are being paid fulltime for it. There is a massive inequity built into the system" she says.
Metiria Turei says some Crown negotiators are being paid a heap of money.
