Education Minister Hekia Parata says Trade Academies are a real success story particularly for Maori boys.

She says a report by the Education Review Office on 15 of 24 Trade academies around the country found they have been very successful .

"Many of the students attending these are Maori and are many of those boys and that's important because one of our biggest challenges in terms of losing kids from the system is our boys our brown boys our Maori and Pacific boys. So trades academies have been particularly effective for these young people" she says.

Hekia Parata says the budget has made provision for the number of student studying at trade academies to be increase from 5000 to 6200 over the next four years and she's expecting the success to flow through into the workforce.
