In the wake of the Maori All Blacks come from behind win against Fiji, a Ngati Porou sports commentator wants to see iwi put settlement money behind Maori sports.
Ken Eruera says the 27-26 result at Suva was a reflection of how Maori teams are often treated as an aside by the game’s governing body, so they are thrown in the deep end with little time to prepare.
He says it wouldn’t need a huge sum to support a range of codes, and iwi could contribute to an endowment fund with the interest being spent on national sports teams.
The Maori All Blacks take on the Barbarians at Eden Park on Saturday, and then put their jerseys away until next June when they have a match against the British and Irish Lions in Rotorua.
