Unprecedented interest in Arawa proposal

Rotorua Lakes Council has received almost 1900 submissions on the proposed new Te Arawa partnership model, the most submissions it has ever received for a single issue.
They include four petitions, one with 1370 submissions against the proposal, one with 250 signatures asking council to consider an alternate model, and two in support of the proposal with 33 and 27 signatures.
Te Arawa presented the model last year and asked the council to consult widely.
The council also asked for submissions on retaining the existing Te Arawa standing committee, modifying it, or doing away with a formal partnership.
Chief executive Geoff Williams says people have suggested variations of all of the models, as well as putting forward some completely different ideas.
The council will hold hearings for submitters next week and then vote on the proposal at an extraordinary Council meeting on May 26.
