Pa sculpture for new motorway

Drivers travelling from Te Puke to Tauranga may be wondering about the palisades going up near the Domain Road interchange of the new Tauranga Eastern Link.
The 130 metre long pa scuplture, made from recycled wharf piles and roadside safety guard rails, is by artist Regan Gentry with funding from the NZ Transport Agency and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council,
Gentry says it refers to the historic pa sites in the Papamoa Hills.
Once it is finished he will build an eight metre high spinifex from street lights near the Tara Road roundabout, to reference the wind-blown coastal plant that is a feature of the Papamoa beach scape which runs parallel to the Eastern Link.
Other artworks along the link identify key locations, such as the waharoa which overlooks the Paengaroa roundabout, or the panels on the Domain Road interchange that reflect the historic flax trade.
