Aotea Conservation Park opens
Nominations open this week for iwi an community members to join an advisory panel to help the Department of Conservation manage the country’s newest park.
Aotea Conservation Park was opened on Friday by Conservation Minister Maggie Barry.
The park, which was created by reclassifying stewardship land, covers more than 12,000 hectares or 43 percent of Great Barrier Island.
Ms Barry says it will enable increased public access to the island’s beauty while safeguarding its natural treasures and rare species including the chevron skink, the North Island kaka, the patete/brown teal and black petrel and the Great Barrier tree daisy, which is found only on the island.
