More workers, not more reviews
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says Child, Youth and Family needs more resources, not another review.
Social Development Minister Anne Tolley has asked former Commerce Commission chair Paula Rebstock to head a review of the organisation, but the panel is under fire for not including any Maori or social workers.
Mr Peters says the service hasn’t trained enough people to cope with society’s problems.
"We know in the Maori world the only people who can turn this around is us. We have to have a renaissance of Maori thinking on this matter. We have a long way to go. The government is not helping by downsizing or failing to upskill enough people to meet the challenges out there. So you'll get all these people falling through the cracks all the time because we haven't got the firepower, man power or woman power to deal with it" he says.
Winston Peters say Child, Youth and Family relies too much on non-registered social workers.
