Waka marathon will test endurance
This weekend is about endurance for the country’s top kaihoe.
More than 600 paddlers plus their supporters are expected in the small Northland town of Ruakaka over the next two days for the ActivePost National Long Distance Waka Ama Championships.
One, two or six paddler teams from more than 35 clubs will compete over 12km, 15km, and 30km courses.
Waka Ama New Zealand chief executive Lara Collins says the 30km event will be the highlight.
“Paddlers have been training for months for these championships. The marathon event tests their limits and we often see some epic sprints to the finish line.”
She says entries have doubled on last year.
The first race begins at 8.30am tomorrow with the 30km Women and Mixed Championship race.
