Writer and producer Bailey Mackey has been honoured at New Zealand on Air’s 25th anniversary celebration for his efforts to bring local content to the screen.
The GC and Marae producer says as someone who started his broadcasting career before Maori Television, it’s great to see the space that now exists for Maori contributors.
He says they need to be confident in their vision and to take an international perspective, rather than be put off by the challenge of getting Maori content on to mainstream New Zealand screens.
"Quite often what doesn’t work for us locally works for us globally. You go to a television market or lately a film market and if you're told in Aotearoa something's too Maori, you have to change it, it's actually what makes the difference when you get overseas. So a biggie for me is to encourage other Maori producers to marerstart looking internationally," Mr Mackey says.
