The journey of a group of young Maori from South Auckland to the world hip hop dance champs in Las Vegas is the subject of a new six-part documentary series that has won funding in the latest NZ On Air round.
Rogue Productions has secured $279,000 for the Kanikani series, which will screen on Maori Television.
New Zealand On Air is also funding three Pakipumeka documentaries for the channel:
Raids To Reconciliation, which looks at the journey of activist and kaumatua Tame Iti from the 2007 Urewera terror raids to the year of reconciliation with police in 2014;
Haka & Guitar which looks at the strategies used by New Zealand soldiers to bring peace to Bougainville 18 years ago; and
Hautoa Ma!, a survey of Maori film-making.
Whitebait Productions gets just over $1 million to make the second season of 25 half hour 2Kaha youth programmes for TV2.
Te Amokura Productions gets $177,000 to make Beyond The Bully for Prime, a one hour special looking at the issue of bullying through the deeply personal stories of former All Black Norm Hewitt and Hollywood actor Manu Bennett.
NZ On Air chief executive Jane Wrightson says Maori programmes in English are an essential way of ensuring all New Zealanders have the opportunity to experience stories from the Maori world, and pick up some Te Reo along the way.
