Ranea overcomes shyness for belated first album

After years of staying in the shadows of his twin Ruia, Ranea Aperahama has released an album under his own name.
Tihei Mauri Ora adds to a back catalogue stretching back more than 30 years that includes the Southside of Bombay hit What’s The Time Mr Wolf, the Tui finalist album Whare Mana with his brother and the Bob Marley in te reo tribute album, again with Ruia.
He says it was former Southside bandmate Maaka McGregor who got him to overcome his shyness and put some songs out under his own name.
"I said to Maaka, 'I'm quite scared brother' and he said 'Why's that,' and I said 'Well I'm opening my soul up, I feel naked. I don't know if I can actually handle it.' And he said 'Kia kaha bro, it's a part of having a gift and sharing it with the world.' And I go 'Oh okay then,'" Aperahama says.
Tihei Mauri Ora was released at Ranea Aperahama’s home pa Ratana in January and tracks are starting to pick up sales and airplay.
