Labour MP backing innovation

Labour’s Tamaki Makaurau MP says he’s willing to give charter schools a chance as a way to drive innovation in Maori education.
Peeni Henare attended the opening in Mangere this week of Te Kura Maori o Waatea, which offers a blend of kaupapa Maori and Steiner education.
While Labour has opposed the Governments partnership schools policy, Mr Henare’s maiden speech endorsed the work of He Puna Marama Trust’s Leadership Academy of A Company in Whangarei, which has now come under the charter school programme.
"I without hesitation came along to Nga Whare Waatea to tautoko a kaupapa that works for our tamariki. I think it's the closest our people have had for well over 100 years in defining learning for their tamariki, so I am all for that kaupapa," Mr Henare says.
