Selwyn Parata has been confirmed as the new chair of Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou.
He replaces the late Apirana Mahuika, who headed the East Coast tribal organisation from its founding in 1987 until his death this month.
Rei Kohere was appointed deputy chair.
They will hold their positions until the four year term of the current elected representatives concludes in November.
Mr Parata has held various governance positions within Ngati Porou and is a recognised authority on the tribe’s reo me ona tikanga,
He also chairs national Maori performing arts roopu Te Matatini and is a trustee for Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa.
