Land law timetable on track
The Minister for Maori Development expects a bill overhauling Maori land law will be introduced to parliament towards the end of the year.
Te Ururoa Flavell says Te Ture Whenua Maori is stifling the ability of Maori people to use their land.
He’s looking at major changes to the 20-year-old act, including allowing decisions to be made by smaller groups of owners.
" At the moment you have to have up to 75 per cent of all the owners in agreement with a particular decision. The downside is that many of the owners may well have passed on. That their shares have been split down so small that 75 per cent in the year 1900 is a hell of a lot different from 75 per cent in 2015 " he says.
Te Ururoa Flavell says the bill is now on its fifth draft, and could be ready to take out to consultation mid-year.
