Crown revives cabaret for love
Thirty years after he gave up performing to manage bands, venues and radio stations, Armand Crown is oiling his tonsils for the cabaret revival.
He’s back in front of the microphone for a Valentines Day dinner and show at the Point Chevalier RSA tomorrow night.
Crown says it’s a type of entertainment that has gone out of fashion, but done well there’s nothing to beat a good singer and band doing classic R&B soul, jazz and Motown hits in an intimate atmosphere.
He’ll be backed by a band including son Phil on keyboards, Helen Crown on backing vocals, drummer Johnny Bradfield, nephew Kareem Hetaraka-Brown on sax and Nick Nahi on percussion.
" It’s great to have their support and yes we will be doing stuff that you don't hear these days, definitely candlelight stuff. We'll be singing the old favourites by Nat King Cole, Brooke Benton, Same Cooke all the favourites that you don't hear around these days, but theyre love songs of course for Valentines Day. It will be a great night at Point Chev RSA because it's a great room " he says.
