The government says a strong Maori contribution is required for the economic development potential of Northland to be realised.
Taking advantage of the number of politicians and iwi leaders in north for Waitangi event, Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy yesterday released the Northland Regional Growth Study.
It shows the Northland region has significant untapped economic potential and its industries could grow substantially thanks to its resource-based advantages.
Mr Guy says the region’s natural assets, rich cultural heritage and youthful population present distinctive and significant opportunities for growth in the tourism, forestry, dairy, aquaculture and horticulture sectors.
However, there is a need to build scale in areas such as oyster and mussel production, dairy, avocado and citrus production.
Mr Joyce says improving economic outcomes in the region is key to improving the health and social outcomes for its people.
Tai Tokerau iwi leaders yesterday released their own strategy on how to grow the Maori economy.
