Waka to join anniversary regatta
Some of the voyaging waka now in the country will be seen on the waters of the Waitemata this weekend as part of the Auckland Anniversary regatta.
Hoturoa Kerr from Te Toki Voyaging Trust says there has been a burst of activity around the Hawaiian vessel Hokulea, which is on a journey around the world to highlight concerns about climate change and the state of the oceans.
The Hokulea and its support boat Hikianalia are currently in Wellington.
But some of their companions are still in Tamaki Makaurau, and they will be heading further north to Waitangi in early February.
Mr Kerr says they will join commemorations for the 175th anniversary of the signing of the treaty, and also honour master waka builder Hekenukumai Busby.
" For him to be able to see that effort, that he has expended on trying to make this kaupapa grow and regenerate, will be a bit of fruition in seeing 3 or 4 sailing waka sail up to Waitangi and honour him and the dream that he had. We are looking forward to that as well. It is all looking good " he says.
