Community projects get Ma Te Reo funds

Wananga reo, promotional events and the creation of language resources will be funded out of the Maori Language Commission’s latest round of Ma te Reo funding for community-based initiatives.
Te Taura Whiri acting chief executive Poia Rewi says he’s encouraged by the quality of applications received, which totalled more than $6 million.
Only $2.4 million was available, which will go to 43 wananga reo, eight language planning initiatives, five kura a iwi, 18 events and promotions and 13 language resource projects.
He says Te Reo Wainene o Tua – Storytelling in Maori, which received funding in 2013, shows the sort of innovation that Ma te Reo encourages.
That scheme reintroduced the art of storytelling in Maori to children by using fluent kaikorero Maori using familiar words and animated actions to tell stories.
