R&B story one of survival

The songs of soul great Etta James will get an airing at Auckland’ Aotea Centre this evening, courtesy of Australian singer Vika Bull.
In the engine room of her Essential R&B Band will be guitarist Dion Hirini from Ngati Raukawa, who is looking forward to playing back on home whenua.
He’s based in Melbourne, where he has been backing Vika and her sister Linda for more that a decade.
He says it’s a great show from a singer who can sing ballads or belt out the R & B tunes.
"When she was 20 she was touring the world with Black Sorrows and she has been non-stop ever since. Her musical journey is similar to Etta’s, they’re just survivors, they keep going and going and going " says Dion Hirini.
At Last – The Etta James Story starts at the ASB Theatre at 8pm.
