Davis holistic on portfolios

Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis says his shadow portfolios will suit a concerted approach to some of the county’s most significant problems.
New leader Andrew Little has ranked the Te Tai Tokerau MP eighth in his caucus and made him his spokesperson on police, corrections, sexual and family violence, Maori education and associate regional development.
Kelvin Davis says it’s important to look at the reasons Maori are being locked up at a disproportionate rate, and some of that comes down to the damage done to them by violence, sexual abuse, and poor education.
"My sexual and domestic role will have actually lend itself nicely to helping people avoid the corrections facilities. So each of my portfolios now sort of ties in nicely to each other. If I can actually have an impact on Maori education that will go along way to keeping our people out of trouble " he says.
