Major shake-up at wananga

Staff at Te Wananga o Aotearoa are waiting to see what happens with their jobs as the new management steam embarks on major structural changes.
The distance learning subsidiary, Open Wananga Ltd, is being wound up as a separate company and its operations will be taken over by the main wananga.
This is likely to mean some back office jobs could go, although chief executive Jim Mather says it’s not a cost cutting exercise.
He says the aim of the organisational redesign, which he is calling Te Raumairanga, is to better align resources and strengthen teams.
Mr Mather says there will be growth in some areas and a reduction in roles in other areas.
The Open Wananga has about 5000 equivalent full time students taking home-based programmes.
Overall the wananga has 32,000 tauira, more than half of them Maori, making it the country’s largest Maori tertiary institution.
