Primary teachers rally against reform
Primary school teachers have protested against the Government's controversial Investing in Educational Success policy.
The policy driven by Education Minister Hekia Parata would take high-performing teachers and principals and share them among clusters of schools.
The Post Primary Teachers Association is working with Education Ministry officials on details of the polciy, which is says includes features relating to career development that it has been asking for.
But the union representing primary teachers, NZEI Te Riu Roa, has voted overwhelmingly against it.
President Judith Nowotarski says 400 delegates at its annual meeting in Rotorua rallied against it at the Government Gardens this morning.
She says teachers, principals and support staff from across the country are committed to promoting genuine collaboration between schools and early childhood services, but believe the IES is a top down, one size fits all model that is unworkable in the primary sector.
