Labour sees iwi-driven regional Maori development groups as a critical part of the post-settlement world.

In its Maori policy released in Whangarei yesterday, it reaffirmed its commitment to settling historical claims by 2020, after which it would review the role of the Waitangi Tribunal.

Leader David Cunliffe says Labour is committed to working towards a positive Treaty partnership in the post-settlement era.

The new groups would link iwi and hapu with business and public agencies.

He says the scale that can be achieved by Maori entities working together is the key to accessing international trade markets and fully realising the value of Maori business.

It will also look to establish a Maori innovation and development fund.
