Labour backing iwi regional development plans
Labour leader David Cunliffe says iwi will play a big part in the party’s plans for the regions.
He says the party will work region by region, town by town to identify opportunities for jobs and development.
He says in some cases that will include infrastructure, such as upgrading the rail line between Auckland and North Port.
"Another one that we have been talking about is a major aquaculture development in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, working with iwi there, and the government chipping in to assist with the improvement of the Opotiki Harbour bar. Thye are all things where they are big projects, you've got to have central government as part of the play but we would also want locals with skin in the game," Mr Cunliffe says.
