Students encouraged to take up science
More than 130 Maori secondary school pupils have taken part in Massey University’s annual Kura Putaiao open day to see what life could be like as a science student.
Maori student advisor Renee Carson says Maori students have a unique worldview and need to identify themselves within science to successfully engage and pursue it as a career.
She says despite huge growth in the science, health and engineering sectors, the number of pupils choosing science or technology in tertiary education is declining worldwide.
The trend is more prevalent among minority groups such as Maori.
