Te Atiawa and Ngaruahine initial settlements


Two more Taranaki iwi have initialled deeds of settlement but a third has held back because one of its major claims remains unresolved.
Ngaruahine from south of the mountain and Te Atiawa from New Plymouth and Waitara stand to get packages worth $67.5 million and $91 million respectively.
Another significant part of the settlement deals with the future of the Waitara endowment land block.
Te Atiawa’s settlement includes the option of purchasing the Waitara endowment land block, which was the site of the events that led to the first Taranaki war.
The settlement will also include an apology from the Crown, including an acknowledgement of the impact of land confiscation on the iwi.
It’s due to be delivered by Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson at a signing on August 9.
A third iwi, Taranaki Tuturu, was set to initial a $70 million deal but held off because issues around the occupation of Parihaka have not been resolved.
