Funding keeps us above the line
The government's budget decision to provide an extra $12 million over the next four years for iwi radio has been welcomed by Radio Waatea's general amanager Bernie 'Donnell.
Mr O'Donnell says for the past 20 years iwi radio stations have been under-funded and have struggled to make ends meet.
He says it will enable iwi stations to get above the bottom line and pay rents which are a struggle every year.
"It just enables us to get above the line alot of us operate in the red and it drives our finance and account managers nuts every year " says Mr O'Donnell
The additoinal funding will take total funding to $13.7 million which will go towards the operational costs of the 21 stations currently funded by Te Mangai Paho and towards assessing the feasibility of expanding the iwi radio network.
