LEC calls for Taurima rethink

Labour’s Tamaki Makaurau electorate committee wants the party council to reconsider its decision to veto broadcaster Shane Taurima from seeking nomination for the seat.
On Monday the council refused to give Mr Taurima the waiver, which he needs because he has not been a financial member for a year.
President Moira Coatsworth said it was not in the best interests of the party, given the contents and conclusions of a report that found the former Television New Zealand Maori unit head has used TVNZ resources for Labour Party activities.
Last year Mr Taurima was given a waiver to seek the nomination for the Ikaroa Rawhiti by-election.
Tomorrow the council will consider whether to reopen nominations for the Auckland-based seat.
The electorate committee says it’s disappointed by the decision.
Former MPs Dover Samuels and John Tamihere have also said the party should have left the electorate to make a decision on the candidate, with Mr Samuels saying the party was throwing away a chance to regain the seat.
