Language progamming wins Tumeke prize

Whakatane-based Tumeke FM has won the Iwi station of the year award at this year’s New Zealand Radio awards.
That’s on top of the award for best advertising campaign it picked up at last month’s Iwi Radio Awards.
Operations director Tracey Eparaima also won an associated craft award, which recognises the off-microphone work required to make a successful radio.
She says the station has gone from strength to strength since it stopped trying to cater for both advanced speakers and learners on the same frequency.
"When it came to Tumeke FM we decided to programme that station with a target audience matatau i te reo Maori, the language became the prominence of that station. Whereas our other station Sun FM became the vehicle of learning te reo," Ms Eparaima says.
She says advertisers are starting to realise there is value in reaching out to a Maori language audience.
