Ngati Hine distrusts process

Northland’s Ngati Hine Runanga is pushing on with its bid for an urgent Waitangi Tribunal hearing into the Ngapuhi treaty settlement process, despite a personal intervention from the Minister for Treaty Negotiations.
Chris Finlayson met the runanga last week to hear its concerns about the mandate to negotiate that has been given to Tuhoronuku, a body originally set up by Te Runanga o Ngapuhi.
Ngati Hine chair Waihoroi Shortland says while the minister is looking for what he called an elegant
solution to the divisions that are wracking Ngapuhi, his hapu has no faith in the process as it now stands.
"We’ve never had faith in the architects. We've never had faith in some ancient historical binding of hapu in a way that some people have tried to sway it in the north."
"There are certain things that we can do together and there are certain things we do with those immediately around us and there are certain things you must do on your own," he says.
