Kaupapa first for MP

Labour MP Shane Jones says Maori are naturally ready to reach across political boundaries to help other Maori.
The Northland-based list MP has declared a $1000 donation from prominent National Party identity Sir Wira Gardiner towards his campaign to become Labour’s leader.
He says he took the gift in the spirit it was offered, as an expression of Sir Wira’s lifelong commitment to encouraging Maori leadership.
Mr Jones says kaupapa Maori can be found in all political waka.
"I tend to embrace that approach of Wira's. When Claudette Hauiti became a parliamentarian, I went out of my way to be helpful to her. I have never once been destructive to Metiria Turei. I think the more younger Maori we have coming in to politics, particularly Maori women, it is good for us as a people and its a positive development for the country," he says.
