The system of rangatahi courts that has helped reduce reoffending in some North Island centres is coming to the South Island.
Courts Minister Chester Burrows says the special Youth Court sessions will be held at Christchurch’s Nga Hau e Wha Marae.
He says the courts are proving successful at making rangatahi accountable to their families and communities.
He says for young Maori who offend, helping to reconnect them with their iwi, hapu and marae community can be a powerful tool.
