Raukawa making plans post-settlement
Ngati Raukawa has moved into the next stage of its journey now that parliament has passed its $50 million historic settlement.
Kaumatua from the South Waikato iwi were at parliament yesterday to hear MPs debate the bill and acknowledge the treaty breaches that led to land loss and under-development.
Settlement trust chair, Vanessa Eparaima, says the iwi had been positioning itself for the future.
"We have absolutely begun our journey. We’ve got a very good reputation in the work that’s been achieved in our te reo mahi. Our environment group is very active, especially along the Waikato River. I think we’ve got a very good governance structure. We don’t devolve any of the settlement assets, we keep everything whole within the organization so we can grow those assets to support our people," she says.
