Harawira flags child poverty as election choice
Mana leader Hone Harawira says the prospect of a referendum on a new flag is a diversion from real issues like child poverty.
Mr Harawira says that will be the focus of Mana’s campaign for the September election, in which it intends to stand candidates in all seven Maori seats.
He says the Government would rather talk about flags than supermarkets dumping fish while children go hungry.
"The number of children living in poverty has gone up from 265,000 to 285,000. That’s the critical issue. We have 60 kids a year dying before age 1 from poverty-related illnesses, yet this Government says it is doing enough. It’s unacceptable. We’ve got to keep pushing the notion that a healthy society is one that prioritises its children first," Mr Harawira says.
