Blond and botox no cause for attack
A leading Maori broadcaster says the death of Charlotte Dawson points to a wider problem of harassment of women in the media industry.
Aroha Hathaway, who has hosted on Radio Waatea as well as working in other high profile radio and television roles, says high profile performers like Ms Dawson get negative pressure not just from social media but from interactions in the workplace.
She says the Sydney-based New Zealander was brave and smart, and she should not have been attacked for having blond hair and Botox.
She says the media doesn’t do a good job protecting its people.
"In our industry for far too long women have been openly attacked and the attacks have been ignored. So what you do is you sit there and you watch these men get away with everything and you feel like the bad person for having given in. There are no safety mechanisms in place," Ms Hathaway says.
