River clean-up given wide reach

The group responsible for overseeing the health of the Waikato and Waipa Rivers wants to give the community a bigger say.
Healthy Rivers Wai Ora is a joint committee of Waikato Regional Council and river iwi.
Co-chair Roger Pikia of Te Arawa says a recent stakeholder workshop proposed a 20-member Collaborative Stakeholder Group, which the committee has increased to 25 to include four extra community seats and one for rural professionals.
There were 13 seats already set aside for sector groups to nominate their own representatives, with the remaining seats chosen by iwi, the council and the Waikato River Authority.
The group will be involved in making recommendations on a regional plan change for the Waikato and Waipa rivers, which will set limits and targets for land-based activities.
