More treaty education needed
One of the co-chairs of the Constitutional Advisory Panel says the conversation needs to continue because constitutional basics such as the Treaty of Waitangi aren’t widely understood.
In its report released yesterday, the panel advised against putting the Treaty into a written constitution.
But it recommended more education in schools and communities on civics, the Treaty and citizenship.
Sir Tipene O’Regan says some parts of society suspect that any such education is a leftist plot, but there is problem when the community does not understand its own history.
"The one dominant theme coming through is a better understanding of both that history and the systems so that we can have more intelligent discourse in the society about the future rather than getting down to some of the simplistic slogans that we basically live off," he says.
