Tribe taking long term view of navy land
Ngati Whatua o Orakei is taking its time developing land it bought as part of its historic treaty settlement.
The hapu discussed its development plans for Orakei and Deveonport at its annual hui at the weekend, where is also revealed details of its $107 million profit.
Spokesperson Ngarimu Blair says the hapu paid $120 million for several blocks of land on the North Shore, and it now needs to works through the design, planning and consent processes.
"We’ve leased back for five years to the navy and we're trying to work with the navy and the local community board and others around trying to create a future diverse precinct, so that we have navy staff living there and we also have the high end people as well in nice apartments and we try to create a coimmunity with retirees through to young couples so its not just rows and rows of town houses" he says.
Ngarimu Blair says the first building will probably be on the 10 acre waka kura site by Narrow Neck.
He says says the increase in the tribe’s wealth through its management of treaty settlements has only ut it back in the position it should have been 150 years ago.
