Denese Henare admitted to District Court bench


Auckland lawyer Denese Henare has been appointed a District Court judge to serve in Auckland.
Judge Henare, from Ngati Hine and Ngapuhi, was appointed to the bar in 1974, and the following year was asked to work as a commissioner on the Royal Commission on Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion.
She worked as a company solicitor for Air New Zealand before entering sole practice in 1989 specialising in Maori land law, administrative law and public law.
She was principal legal advisor to Tainui in their fisheries, Raupatu Lands and Waikato River claims, and has also been honorary legal advisor to the Maori Women’s Welfare League, Pasifika and many other community organisations.
Judge Henare was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1997.
